Local SEO Checklist: 17 Steps to Rank Higher in the Map Pack
The exact checklist I run through for every local client — from Google Business Profile to reviews to on-page signals.
Most local businesses lose the map pack before the race even starts — not because of competition, but because the basics are incomplete. This checklist covers the 17 items I verify for every local SEO client, in the order that matters.
1. Google Business Profile foundations
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Unverified listings barely rank.
- Primary category: pick the single category that matches your main revenue driver. Add 2–4 relevant secondary categories — never stuff.
- Complete every field: hours (including holiday hours), phone, website, services, products, attributes. Empty fields are missed relevance signals.
- Photos weekly: businesses with 100+ photos get dramatically more actions. Real photos of work, team and premises — not stock.
- Posts: publish a GBP post every 1–2 weeks (offers, updates, events). They expire, so consistency matters.
- Q&A: seed 5–10 common questions and answer them yourself before customers ask confusing ones.
2. Reviews: your #1 prominence signal
- Build a review system: ask every happy customer, within 24 hours of the job, via a direct review link (SMS/WhatsApp works best).
- Reply to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours. Responses are a ranking and trust signal.
- Keywords in reviews: when customers naturally mention your service + area ("best plumber in DHA Lahore"), it reinforces relevance. Never fake them.
3. NAP consistency & citations
- Identical Name, Address, Phone across your website, GBP, and every directory. Even small differences ("St" vs "Street") dilute trust.
- Core citations: get listed on the major data aggregators and 20–30 relevant local/niche directories. Quality over quantity.
4. On-page local signals
- One page per service + area: don't target "plumber Lahore" from your homepage alone — build dedicated, genuinely useful location pages.
- Embed a map and list your full NAP in the footer with LocalBusiness schema.
- Local content: area guides, local case studies and community involvement all build geographic relevance.
5. Measure what matters
- Track map-pack rankings separately from organic — they move independently.
- Watch GBP insights: calls, direction requests and bookings are the metrics that pay the bills, not just views.
Run this checklist quarterly. Local SEO compounds — businesses that do the unglamorous basics consistently are the ones that own the map pack a year from now.
